Reading at Harvills

THE IMPORTANCE OF READING

Reading is an essential skill, which allows us to access many areas of everyday life. For children, being able to read competently and confidently not only enables them to discover new information during their school lives but also opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities. Being able to read well is important for all children and every child deserves the chance to become a reader.

Reading for pleasure

At Harvills Hawthorn we promote a love of books with the aim for all children to see reading as something they enjoy. Promoting a love for reading sets children up as readers for life. Reading for pleasure helps our children to enhance opportunities to learn about things that may not be covered by the school curriculum.

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. Likewise, evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who do not but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.
